Great Food! "Duck" food is a work in progress. We'd love to say we've circled the globe retrieving one fabulous recipe after another, but that wouldn't be quite right. Instead, the menu has evolved from its beginnings as a Mexican and Italian oriented restaurant to a many faceted eating emporium that draws from our favorite culinary styles and instincts.
Duck History Here at the confluence of the Methow and Chewuch rivers, Boston bred Guy Waring founded Winthrop in 1891. Trappers, prospectors and homesteaders tramped into his frontier store. Mr. Waring, who hated liquor, opened his Duck Brand Saloon to keep the worse ones out. Anyone who started to get drunk was given the boot - a policy which must have surprised many patrons. Waring's Harvard classmate, Owen Wister, spent his honeymoon here in 1898. Four years later, Wister completed "The Virginian" and the first western novel burst upon an unsuspecting nation. Waring named Winthrop after the colonial Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts. The original Duck Brand Saloon is now the Winthrop Town Hall. We have revived the historic Duck Brand name in the continuing tradition of hospitality in the Methow Valley.
