Take Flight

The Goat Peak Crew (3rd, 4th and 5th graders) at the Methow Valley Community School are immersed in a year-long science, math and literacy focused expedition on flight. During the fall, students are learning about human flight, investigating the history of flight, how flight happens, and how flight has impacted our valley and changed the world. In September, this crew conducted some field work during a Seattle overnight adventure, visiting the Museum of Flight and iFly (an indoor wind tunnel). At iFLy, students were instructed in some basic mechanics of flight, and then got to fly in the wind tunnel. These are some of their own reflections about the experience.

Flight was fun when the instructor and I went to the top of the air tunnel.

Flying felt as if I was actually in the sky.

I want to do it again because I felt safe.

Next time, I want to learn the hand signals.

Overall, flying was amazing.

Flying was absurdly awesome.

Flying felt like I was being torn apart, pushed together, shoved up and pulled down all at the same time.

My legs and arms were moving as if an invisible hand was pushing them around.

Next time, I’d like to go to the top.

Flying inspired me to keep studying flight.
